Our Gift to God and Sts. Mary and John

Here are pictures of two ciboria that belong to Sts. Mary and John Parish. They are both used to house the Sacred Host at Mass and in the tabernacle. Both of them need to be cleaned, repaired, and re-plated to return them to a beautiful condition that is worthy of the Body of the Lord.

Ciborium 1 is an antique piece that most likely comes from the original Holy Trinity church. Its style indicates it is from the mid-to-late 1800s. The cup is made of silver, while the cap, neck and base are brass. In one picture, you can see the face of a cherub. In another, you’ll find an image of St. Philomena holding an anchor. The neck of the ciborium has been damaged and the cup is about to break off. You will see around the base small holes that once had glass imitation “gems” set into them. Purchasing and installing new gems is not a part of this project.

Ciborium 2 is another antique that likely dates to the 1930s or 1940s. The design is simple yet demonstrates amazing craftsmanship. Except for the Cross and the node (which are brass), the entire piece is made from hand-hammered silver. Because of the amount of silver and the labor involved in its crafting, this ciborium is the more valuable of the two.

The total cost for restoring these beautiful pieces is estimated to be $1,850. Some generous people from the Latin Mass community have pledged $1,240 to make this gift to Sts. Mary and John. These ciboria will be in regular use during the Latin Mass.

If you would like to donate funds of any amount to help with the $610 difference, please see Fr. Ryan or email him at rhilderbrand@evdio.org.

UPDATE (11/10/19): The restoration cost has been revised downward from the original estimate to $1,750. Before Mass today $1,340 had been contributed. If you’re able to give anything more toward the fund ($410 needed), Fr. Ryan suggests the best way is to place your check or cash into an envelope, label it “ciboria,” and simply drop it into the collection basket. Thank you!
